I first learned about Joy Frempong a.k.a `OY` through another artist I`m rather fond of, Berlin based Electronic producer and musician pOnk (More about him Later!), who had worked with Joy. A year later in the fall of 2009 I heard her distinct, and truly unique voice once again when she collaborated with fellow Swiss musicians Filewile  on their dub laced album `Blueskywell`.

Fast forward to February 3rd 2010 and Oy releases a wondrous debut album, mixed by the most talented pOnk, and mastered by NYC`s Tidy Kid & Australia`s Alchemix.

The playfully titled `Box Then Walk`released on Creaked Records, features 27 (yes, you read right!), beautiful, nostalgia inducing tracks. Joy asked her friends and family to tell her about childhood memories, which she in turn used as inspiration with her own memories to create the songs for the album. What you get is a bright, cheeky, often insecure and at times eerie peek into the world of the child within us all. 

Her sensibility, attention to detail and carefully crafted lyrics are perfect, dripping with innocence and housing a depth that is hard to describe. The record features stories about being scared of snakes under the bed, biting kittens, Trolls in the forest and witches who live in the toilet.  Experimental music, which swings the gamut from Jazz, to hip hop, to electronica, created using samples, toys, piano and synths, carry Joy`s thick, silken vocals wonderfully.

OY is a stand alone vocalist and producer, and you`ll no doubt be hearing more from her over the next year Grab your copy of `First Box Then Walk`- HERE!
